William John Harrington

He was born in Bowburn, County Durham, and served with 8, 9 and 10 DLI during the Great War. He was killed in action as a Lance Corporal with 10 DLI on 16 September 1916 in an attack on "Gird Trench" - a strong German position north of Flers - during the battle of the Somme. William Harrington was 22 years old when he was killed. He has no known grave but his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial in France, which lists the names of over 73,000 British soldiers who died on the Somme and who have no known grave.
